Growing up, Gaye Johnson, Snellville’s director of Public Works, envisioned flowers, not pipes, as part of a future career. “My grandmother had a huge flower garden,” recalled Ms. Johnson, who is originally from Dawson, Georgia. She would carry them to the church and did the arrangements.
Ms. Johnson moved to this area from South Georgia in the early 1970s. After graduating from South Gwinnett High School, She worked for Prudential Medicare for ten years. She then took a break to stay home while her children were young.
When Ms. Johnson decided to return to work outside the home, through friends, she was alerted about a part-time position with the sanitation and recycling department (there was no public works department at the time). She applied, got the job, and started working there in 1992.
About a year later, the director of that department moved on, and Johnson moved up to the director spot until 2001. Then, the sanitation and recycling department merged with the maintenance department to come under one umbrella – Public Works. Johnson said then-mayor Brett Harrell approached her about becoming public works director, and, with a laugh, she recalled her response: “I told him I’m from South Georgia, but I’ve never really driven a backhoe.”
Such operating experience was not necessary. Ms. Johnson said Mayor Harrell advised her just to be a good manager and know when to hire out certain tasks that needed to be done.
Much has changed for public works and Snellville over the years. There is the $1.5 million Snellville Recycling Center, giving people another convenient way to be eco-friendly. The city also has a curbside recycling program.
The Mission of the Snellville Public Works Department is to improve and maintain the city’s infrastructure while promoting to protect the health and welfare of the city residents, businesses, and visitors. There are three key services maintained within this department: maintenance, recycling, and sanitation. These services include making sure your roadways are maintained, recycling and garbage collection are efficient, drainage issues handled, and overall upkeep of the City’s buildings and vehicles.
Johnson said she would like to see Snellville remain environmentally conscious and active, improve infrastructure, and “provide the best services to our citizens in the most economic and friendly way possible.”
She and her husband Gerald have two children, Trey and Ashley, who also graduated from South Gwinnett. She is proud to be a doting grandmother.

The December 5th Commerce Club meeting and Christmas Luncheon will be held at Noon at Fratelli’s.
Bring a SECRET SANTA gift valued at around $20 and play the Secret Santa Game. Each person bringing a gift will draw a name and pick a gift. Of course, the gift can be stolen by another person during the game! There will also be time for everyone to network and have some fun.
We are collecting cash, canned goods, and non-perishable food items for the Southeast Gwinnett Co-Op to “Give Hunger the Boot”.
Toys will be collected for Toys for Tots.
